Mr Julius Abure, National Chairman of the Labour Party, LP, said on Monday that he got evidence that the All Progressives Congress was already planning a possible re-run of the 2023 presidential election, warning members of the party to be alert.
Abure made the remarks at an online meeting in Abuja with the Nigerian-American Coalition for Justice and Democracy, which was organized by Professor Eddie Oparaoji, the Labour Party’s Diaspora Chairman in the United States.
He said that the ruling party was well aware that the tide was heavily tilted against it in the ongoing legal challenge against the Independent National Electoral Commission’s declaration of presidential election results.
In a statement, the party’s acting national publicity secretary, Obiora Ifoh, reported Abure as saying that the party’s over 10 million members should be “on the alert and get ready to further humiliate APC and its government in the polls if their sinister plot fails to materialize.”
“Rumours have it that those in government are already planning a rerun, and this is one of the support we will be seeking from you,” he said.
“We should also be preparing because, since everyone in government is already preparing for a rerun, we should not be taken unaware.”
“So, we will need your engagement and support on this if, by chance, the election is nullified today, which is not what we are asking for because we are asking for an outright declaration of Peter Obi as President of Nigeria.”
“We are confident that we won that election based on the statistics we have, and given the outcome, we are not expecting anything less than the declaration of Peter Obi as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.” But, if that does not happen, and the administration is seen to be contemplating a repeat, it would not be out of place for us to be prepared for a rerun election.”
Having said that, I must state clearly that we have presented all of our material to the court and are quite hopeful that the panel will rule in our favor.
“We are very optimistic that if the case proceeds to the higher court, the Supreme Court, in this case, it will also rule in our favor.” We are maintaining our confidence and hope.
“In nine months, we were able to change the political narratives of this country, and we must build on those successes in order to have a more formidable party that we can strategically position for Nigeria’s downtrodden people.”
In his contribution to the discussion, Ambassador Oseloka Obaze, Director of the ObiDatti Presidential Campaign, urged Obi-Datti members in the diaspora to consider the effort to reclaim the party’s mandate as a common obligation.
