The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arraigned Alhaji Usman Abubakar and the Young Alhaji Foundation before the Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos State.
The defendants are facing a five-count accusation of obtaining money through deception and stealing N950 million.
Abubakar, the Foundation, and Dr. Abu Omer Fawzi (at large) conspired to collect N950,000,000 from Ano Farms Limited in September 2022.
They reportedly gathered under the pretense that they had the monetary equivalent of the sum in question. As the charges were read in court on Wednesday, Abubakar pled not guilty.
Bilikisu Buhari, prosecuting counsel, asked the court for a trial date so that the prosecution could call witnesses and present relevant documents.
Olatubosun Olanipekun, SAN, counsel for the defendants, pleaded that Abubakar be kept in EFCC custody pending the hearing of the bail application.
Nevertheless, the attempt to make an oral application for bail was refused by the court, as the trial judge held that “this court is a court of records”.
Judge Dada adjourned hearing the bail motion till March 1, 2023, and ordered that the defendant remain with the commission.
