Following the devastating earthquake that struck the southern Turkish city of Kahramanmaras on Monday, the Nigerian Football Federation has said that all Nigerian footballers in Turkey are safe.
The NFF announced this in an Instagram post on Monday evening, shortly after expressing grief at the event and condolences to the victims.
“The Nigeria Football Federation is saddened by the devastating earthquake in Turkey’s Kahramanmaras city. NFF President Alh. Ibrahim Gusau has contacted Nigerian players in Turkey, who have all affirmed that they are safe. “We pray that the spirits of the deceased rest in peace, even as we express our condolences to the people of Turkey at this time,” the NFF said.
According to Aljazeera, the initial quake was followed by a series of aftershocks before a 7.5-magnitude quake in the afternoon that killed over 2,000 people and destroyed dozens of buildings. Turkey’s disaster and emergency management authority confirmed that the earthquake struck at 4:17 a.m. local time, in what has been described as the country’s most seismic occurrence in years.
Nigeria’s President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd. ), has stated that Nigeria is willing to assist Turkey and Syria “in any way possible,” while also expressing condolences to the governments and people of Turkey and Syria, as well as those who lost family and friends in the devastating earthquake.
