The Department of State Services said on Monday that they had arrested an unspecified number of people engaged in selling of the new naira notes.
The DSS accused several commercial bank executives of assisting the crime in a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, Peter Afunanya.
“The Department of State Services now advises the public that it has apprehended several members of organized syndicates involved in selling the newly redesigned naira notes,” it said. During its activities in this respect in various regions of the nation, it was also discovered that some commercial bank executives are assisting economic misconduct.
“Consequently, the Service cautions the currency racketeers to cease from ignoble behavior. Along the same line, appropriate regulatory agencies are asked to increase monitoring and supervision actions to address the growing tendency as soon as possible.
“It should be highlighted that the Service has directed its Commands and Formations to further ensure that all people and organizations engaged in the illicit selling of the notes be identified. As a result, anybody with relevant information is encouraged to share it with the appropriate authorities.”
