In a sermon at St. Finberrs’ Catholic Church in Rayfield, Jos, on Sunday, Rev. Fr. John Jonathan, a Catholic priest, cautioned couples against divorce, highlighting it as not only a significant mistake but also a serious transgression in the eyes of God.
According to Fr. Jonathan, since marriage is divinely instituted, couples should seek God’s guidance and wisdom during challenging times instead of resorting to divorce. He emphasized that God ordained marriage as a positive and fruitful union between a man and a woman, encouraging them to seek God’s grace, wisdom, and understanding to address any marital difficulties they may encounter.
Furthermore, the priest urged couples to foster a God-centered environment in their homes, as this approach would help them tackle challenges and other issues in a harmonious manner. Regular prayer, mutual support, and a concerted effort to achieve a harmonious marriage were among the recommendations given by Jonathan to strengthen the marital bond.
Addressing young individuals intending to marry, Jonathan advised them to exercise wisdom in choosing their life partners. The Catholic Church, as reported by NAN, does not permit divorce for valid sacramental marriages. The Catechism asserts that divorce is a grave violation of the natural law, as it breaks the contract freely entered into by the spouses to live together until death.
