Gabonese army soldiers, acting on behalf of the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions, revealed on national television on Wednesday morning why they are overthrowing President Ali Bongo.
The troops blamed significant institutional, political, economic, and social difficulties for the coup, which they called “necessary” for the West African country’s growth.
“Our beautiful country, Gabon, has always been a haven of peace,” declared the junta in a nationwide address delivered in French but translated into English by AFP.
“The country is currently undergoing a severe institutional, political, economic, and social crisis.”
“As a result, we are forced to admit that the organisation of the general elections on August 26, 2023, did not meet the conditions for a transparent, credible, and inclusive ballot, which the people of Gabon had hoped for.”
“This is compounded by irresponsible and unpredictable governance, resulting in a continuing deterioration in social cohesion and the risk of bringing the country to its knees.”
“Today, 30 August 2023, we, the defence and security forces gathered as the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI) — on behalf of the people of Gabon and as guarantors of the institutions’ protection — have decided to defend the peace by bringing the current regime to an end.”
“As a result, the general elections on August 26, 2023, and the truncated results, are cancelled.”
“Until further notice, the borders are closed.”
The junta decided to disband all of the country’s institutions, including the Federal Government, Senate, National Assembly, Constitutional Court, Economic, Social, and Environmental Council, and Gabonese Elections Centre.
As a result, they appealed for peace and tranquillity from the general public, sister-country communities in Gabon, and the Gabonese diaspora.
“We reaffirm our commitment to upholding Gabon’s national and international commitments.”
“Gabonians, we are finally on the road to happiness.”
“May God and our ancestors’ spirits bless Gabon.” “Honour and loyalty to our homeland.”
