Confusion has gripped Imo state following the killing of His Lordship Nnaemeka Ugboma, Chief Judge of Customary Court of Ejemekwuru in Oguta Local Government Area, by unidentified gunmen on Thursday during a court session.
Eyewitnesses from the Ejemekwuru village reported the occurrence to Owerri-based journalists.
At the time of reporting this story, the hoodlums had not stated a motive for killing the judge, but an eyewitness reported that after pulling out the judge and shooting him, the gunmen indicated their task was not yet complete and that they were headed to another site to finish their duty.
They fled on their motorbikes after killing the judge, yelling and blasting shots within and outside the courthouse.
Also confirming the incident, a colleague of the murdered Judge, Emperor Iwuala, wrote alongside the photo of the victim, he said: “This is my learned brother His Worship Nnaemeka Ugboma Chairman (Judge) Customary Court Ejemekwuru Oguta LGA Imo State shot dead yesterday in court by yet-to-be identified persons. We are, undoubtedly, living in terrible times.”
Ugochukwu Allinor, chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association’s Owerri section, verified the killing as well.
The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Henry Okoye, had yet to respond to the incident at the time of writing this report.
