Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has granted approval for the demolition of several slum areas including Garki, Jabi, and 28 other locations that had previously been surveyed by the Federal Capital Development Authority prior to the current administration.
This demolition initiative, as stated by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), is intended to target approximately 6,000 structures that have been identified and marked for removal. The primary goal is to eliminate shanties and unauthorized constructions from the territory.
The FCTA has announced that this demolition project will impact 30 different areas spread across the Federal Capital Territory.
In the wake of his inauguration as Minister, Nyesom Wike, the former Governor of Rivers State, pledged to reinstate the original master plan of the Federal Capital Territory. He expressed his determination to dismantle all illicit structures and put an end to land speculation. Wike personally inspected the territory at night and expressed concern over the intrusion of unauthorized buildings in the green zones of Abuja. He asserted that these structures would be taken down.
Nyesom Wike mentioned that up to 6,000 unauthorized structures located in 30 different regions within the Federal Capital Territory could potentially be demolished by the government. He emphasized the intention to reclaim land and allocate it to individuals committed to development, with a stipulated timeline for implementation.
