Niger Republic’s military junta has agreed to engage in dialogue with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for the resolution of the country’s political crisis, as stated by Nigeria’s Intervention Team, composed of scholars from various Islamic sects, in a statement released on Sunday. Led by Sheikh Bala Lau, the team met with coup leader General Abdourahmane Tchiani over the weekend, discussing topics including ECOWAS’ demand to reinstate former President Bazoum.
The visit, carried out on behalf of President Bola Tinubu who approved the intervention, aimed to encourage peaceful dialogue for crisis resolution. General Tchiani welcomed the intervention, acknowledging their intent for diplomacy and expressing that the coup was driven by the need to avert a looming threat affecting both Niger Republic and Nigeria.
He also apologized for not initially addressing the team sent by President Tinubu, citing frustration due to the ECOWAS ultimatum.
