The African Union, AU, has been granted permanent membership in the G-20, also referred to as the Group of 20. This significant announcement was made by India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, during the inauguration of a leaders’ summit held in New Delhi, the capital of India, which gathered leaders from the world’s wealthiest nations.
In his opening address, Prime Minister Modi extended an invitation to the Chairman of the African Union, Azali Assoumani, to assume a permanent position within the group. He emphasized the need for global collaboration to bridge the existing trust deficit and foster reliance among nations.
Prime Minister Modi, in his capacity as the G-20 President, stressed the importance of addressing various global challenges, including disparities between North and South, East and West, as well as issues related to food, fuel, terrorism, cybersecurity, health, energy, and water security. He emphasized the urgency of finding lasting solutions for the benefit of future generations.
Prior to this summit, the G-20 consisted of 19 member countries along with the European Union. The Group of 20 primarily focuses on addressing critical global economic issues such as international financial stability, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development.
Notably, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu embarked on his journey to India on Tuesday in preparation for the summit.
