Ahmadu Fintiri has been declared the winner of the Adamawa State governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
Muhammed Melee, the Returning Officer, declared incumbent Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party winner on Tuesday after he received 430,861 votes to overcome his major opponent Aisha Binani of the All Progressives Congress, who received 398,788 votes.
On Tuesday, INEC reopened the collation center for the additional election results. The state staged a supplemental poll on Saturday, April 15, after the March 18 election was ruled inconclusive by INEC due to irregularities.
The collation procedure in the state was halted on Sunday when the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu Ari, declared the All Progressives Congress candidate, Binani, the winner of the poll, prompting the commission to order Hudu to step down on Monday.
The governor-elect remarked in his acceptance speech after being proclaimed the winner that he was “humbled the more.”
While congratulating his fellow contenders for their struggle in the gubernatorial contest, Fintiri questioned Hudu’s decision to declare Binani the winner of the election.
While admitting that the REC’s actions “fell short of expectations,” he congratulated the people of Adamawa for “voting for continuity.”
