The Kogi State government has prohibited private individuals from paying WAEC fees or providing assistance to students in the state.
The incident came on the heels of Natasha Akpoti-Uduanghan, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Kogi Central Senatorial district candidate, promising to fund WAEC costs for pupils in schools around the Central area.
According to Cecilia E. Cook, Executive Chairman of the Kogi State Science, Technical Education, and Teaching Service Commission, the state government made the decision due to the country’s instability.
The state administration has warned that any secondary school principal who fails to follow the command would be fired.
“All principals of public and grant-aided schools must acquire authorization from the commission for any internal or external program,” according to the letter.
“As a result of the security situation in our nation, all the STETSCOM Zonal directors are directed to inform all the principals in their respective zones, that students’ participation in Zonal program outside their schools and external programme outside the state is strictly on permission by the authority of STETSCOM.
“The Zonal Directors should firmly warn the Principals in their zone, that should any Principal default on this command, he or she would undoubtedly and surely be shown the way out. “Please strictly follow this guideline,” the letter states.
On December 11, 2022, Natasha H Akpoti -Uduaghan offered to provide five million naira to offset WAEC expenses of students in Kogi Central to aid parents soften the load of paying the WAEC fees of their children in the five local government areas of Kogi Central senatorial district.
The kids in Kogi Central who would have benefited from the PDP senatorial candidate’s generosity are the worst hurt by the state government’s direction.
Meanwhile, the Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Campaign Organization has stated that the Kogi State government’s decision to halt payment of WAEC fees for security reasons is illogical and an attempt to further punish students whose parents have been denied salaries and are unable to pay their children’s WAEC fees.
