Former President Goodluck Jonathan has advised politicians who did not win the presidential and National Assembly elections, as well as those who may not succeed in their objectives for the forthcoming governorship and state assembly elections, to consider doing business or pursuing other interests.
The former President also described how, in the 2007 presidential election, he almost cried when he was elected Vice President since he had never wanted to be one.
Remember that Jonathan was late President Musa Yar’Adua’s running partner, and the two succeeded former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Atiku Abubakar. When Yar’Adua died in May 2010, Jonathan took over as President.
He urged politicians to act peacefully during and after the 2023 elections.
Jonathan revealed this during a condolence visit to Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri following the death of his father in Sampou Village in the state’s Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area.
“As a leader in the country who has had the privilege of serving at the state and national levels, I can only suggest that politics is not about having to be there. You will be there if God wants you to be there. You will not be present if it is not yet your turn. I almost cried when I was appointed vice president; I never wanted to be there, but it was my destiny, and I had no choice.
“Therefore, I encourage persons who are interested in these offices and their supporters to conduct themselves extremely carefully. They want to serve us rather than themselves.
“I constantly advise individuals that if they are so ambitious, they should get into business. If you want to be a member of the state assembly but no one wants you, go sleep. If you want to be governor but no one wants you, go sleep or do business.
“But if you want to serve us as people then you must be humble and you will not murder us before you serve us. People must behave themselves quietly, and if God wants them to win their elections, they will,” Jonathan stated.
