Taylen Mosley, a two-year-old toddler who had gone missing, was discovered dead in the mouth of an alligator.
Mosley went missing on Thursday after his mother, Pashun Jeffery, 20, was discovered dead in her Saint Petersburg, Florida residence.
She was stabbed many times, according to the police.
Thomas Mosley, the child’s father, has now been arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder, according to police chief Anthony Holloway.
The boy was discovered at Dell Holmes Park, close to Lake Maggiore, and over 10 kilometres from his mother’s residence, according to the police chief.
A detective shot and killed the alligator.
“We didn’t want to find him this way, but at least we can bring that family some closure now,” Mr Holloway said during a news conference.
Family members saw Jeffery and her kid on Wednesday, and when they couldn’t reach her on Thursday, they requested an apartment manager to check, according to police.
A search for the boy included dogs, a drone, and federal and state law enforcement agencies.
The medical examiner will determine the boy’s cause of death.
According to the police, Thomas Mosley checked himself into a hospital and had cuts on his arms and hands.
He was still in hospital on Friday but did not speak to detectives and requested a lawyer, according to police.
