On Wednesday, Rashidat Ahmed, a woman based in Ilorin, filed for divorce at the Area Court in Center-Igboro Ilorin due to enduring consistent physical abuse from her husband, Ahmed Yusuf.
According to the petitioner, their marriage, which produced three children, had been incredibly challenging, and her husband’s violent behavior and irresponsibility had become unbearable. She provided instances when her husband physically assaulted her for not cooking, even though he failed to provide food for the family. Rashidat also revealed that her husband had thrown her belongings out of the house on several occasions, and during a particular incident, he forced her to leave and go back to her father’s house due to a misunderstanding.
Additionally, Rashidat disclosed that Yusuf was involved in some illicit activities that resulted in her arrest while she was pregnant with their third child. She spent two weeks in police custody as a consequence.
In response, Yusuf expressed that he still loves his wife and does not wish for a divorce. He acknowledged the truth in most of the petitioner’s allegations but contested the duration of her detention, claiming it was only three days, not two weeks.
Yusuf vowed never to harm his wife again and sought a settlement, stating his intention to visit his in-laws for reconciliation.
Presiding judge, Aminullahi AbdulLateef, advised the wife to consider forgiving her husband, taking into account his plea and the forgiving nature of God. He also urged the husband to improve his behavior and be responsible for the welfare of his family.
The judge warned that any man who abuses his wife will not lead a peaceful and prosperous life. Subsequently, he adjourned the case to accommodate the respondent’s application for settlement and requested a report on the settlement progress on the next hearing date.
The case is scheduled for further hearing on September 20.
