The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Joe Ajaero, has stated that they have no need to apologize for establishing the Labour Party, LP.
In the last general election, the LP emerged as one of the most influential political parties in the country. It successfully secured several seats in the National Assembly, including six Senate seats and 34 House of Representatives seats.
During an interview on Channels Television on Tuesday night, Ajaero explained that the party was created to provide an opportunity for ordinary Nigerians to participate in and win elections. He noted that even the party’s standard bearer, Peter Obi, has no affiliation with any labour union.
Ajaero stated, “We do not owe anyone an apology for forming the Labour Party. The Labour Party was established and organized by labour unions from around the world… Within the time when Adams Oshiomole was running for governorship, the Labour Party collaborated with those who formed the APC, AD, and the ACN at the time to endorse Adams for a joint ticket. It was not a crime for the Labour Party to decide to form an alliance with other political parties.”
“Later on, we decided to establish our own political party, and today, we are not in alliance with any political party. We have no apologies for forming a political party that is intended to benefit all ordinary Nigerians… Not all members of the Labour Party are workers. They are not members of trade unions. People in the National Assembly and even the Presidency are not members of trade unions. The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party has no affiliation with any labour union.”
“Any Nigerian who wishes to join the Labour Party is welcome. We formed the Labour Party because Nigerian workers earning the minimum wage cannot afford to purchase forms and contest elections under any of the existing political parties, whether APC or PDP. That’s why we insisted on having our own political party where even a messenger or clerk can run for elections and emerge victorious. Today, even motorcycle riders are represented in the National Assembly through the Labour Party. If anyone has any doubts about it, the purpose of establishing the LP has been accomplished,” he added.
