The Defence Headquarters has clarified that the drone attack on Ligarma community in the Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Sunday was conducted based on intelligence regarding suspicious activities of terrorists in the region. The statement, released by Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, on Tuesday in Abuja, provided details on the Nigerian Army Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) detachment’s observations.
According to Buba, the UAV detachment detected the movement of terrorists at Ligarma around 2200hrs on Sunday, a known terrorist-infested area in Kaduna State. Aerial surveillance revealed groups of individuals employing tactics and methods consistent with terrorist activities. The terrorists’ advancement, posing a threat to key infrastructure in the vicinity, prompted the military to take action to prevent potential harm to innocent civilians.
Buba emphasized the military’s commitment to distinguishing between civilians and terrorists, acknowledging that terrorists often hide within civilian populations. He highlighted the tragic nature of civilian deaths during operations and assured that the military endeavours to avoid such incidents by providing precise instructions to communities.
One such measure involves communities alerting troops about their activities, especially when a community is known to be infiltrated by terrorists and their sympathizers. Buba underscored the military’s adherence to international laws and its determination to eradicate terrorism, acknowledging the challenges posed by terrorists disguising themselves as civilians. The statement concluded by affirming the military’s commitment to finding innovative solutions to address these challenges in the conduct of its operations.
