Renowned comedian Atunyota Akpobome, popularly known as Ali Baba, shared his most memorable joke about President Olusegun Obasanjo’s frugality during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise breakfast show on Saturday.
In his anecdote, Ali Baba recounted an encounter with President Obasanjo, during which he made a joke about the former President’s reputation for being thrifty. This particular joke has stood the test of time and remains evergreen.
It’s worth noting that President Olusegun Obasanjo served as Nigeria’s democratically elected President from May 1999 to May 2007, and prior to that, he was Nigeria’s military Head of State from February 1976 to October 1979.
Ali Baba shared the humorous incident, explaining that people had been commenting on President Obasanjo’s perceived stinginess. However, the President himself was unaware of how much money Ali Baba was earning until he stumbled upon some event planning documents involving Audu Ogbeh and Doyin Okupe.
Upon seeing the budget, President Obasanjo was surprised and jokingly asked Ali Baba, “One million naira, why? That’s what he’s been charging since 1999?”
Ali Baba had a good laugh about the situation and then went on to narrate how he introduced President Obasanjo during an African Union event in Abuja. The President had written the foreword for one of Ali Baba’s books and even suggested that he remove the frugality joke from it.
