The United Nigeria Airlines, a prominent carrier in the country, has received approval  for operation of international flights.

The approval, granted by the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, permits the airline to operate international routes to several destinations, including the United States of America, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Italy, Ireland, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

In a letter dated September 8, 2023, addressed to the United Nigeria Airlines Company Limited and signed by Mr. H.T. Ejiburu, Director of Air Transport Management, acting on behalf of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, the approval was granted in accordance with existing Bilateral Air Services Agreements (BASA) between Nigeria and each of these countries.

The letter stated: “We acknowledge receipt of your letter dated August 2, 2023, regarding the above matter and convey the Honourable Minister’s approval for Messrs United Nigeria Airlines Company Limited to operate international flights to the following countries and cities: Netherlands (Amsterdam), Italy (Rome), United Arab Emirates (UAE) (Dubai), United Kingdom (London), United States of America (USA) (Houston), and Ireland (Dublin).

The designation of Messrs United Nigeria Airlines Company Limited is consistent with the existing Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the governments of these six countries.

As a result, the airline is advised to collaborate with the Civil Aviation Authorities of the mentioned countries to complete the necessary documentation before commencing scheduled flight operations.

Additionally, compliance with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulation (Nig. CARs (2023) Part 18.5.1.1 A-C) is required, including coordination with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to meet any additional requirements if necessary.

Please note that this approval has been communicated to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for further necessary actions.”

United Nigeria Airlines, under the leadership of Chairman Prof. Obiora Okonkwo OFR, commenced its flight operations in 2021, offering scheduled flights to major cities within Nigeria.

The airline had previously obtained approval for regional flights and is now in the final stages of preparing to launch regional operations within the next few weeks, following the arrival of additional aircraft in mid-October.”
