As the Appeal Court in Abuja delivers judgment today to determine the winner of the July 16 governorship election in Osun State, the Osun State chapters of the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress have expressed hope for victory.
In addition, the Osun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps stated it had deployed soldiers to vital infrastructure in the state ahead of the ruling.
The Independent National Electoral Commission declared PDP Senator Ademola Adeleke the winner of the election.
According to INEC, Adeleke received 403,371 votes, defeating then-incumbent APC Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, who received 375,027 votes.
However, Oyetola and the APC rejected the results of the election and went to the tribunal.
In its January 27, 2023 majority verdict, the Justice Tertse Kume-led tribunal annulled Adeleke’s victory and declared Oyetola the winner of the poll.
Nevertheless, a minority judgment by Mr. justice B. Ogbuli upheld Adeleke as the winner of the poll.
Adeleke and the PDP were dissatisfied and went to the Court of Appeal.
The majority verdict issued by the Justice Tertse Kume-led tribunal on January 27, 2023, annulled Adeleke’s victory and declared Oyetola the winner of the election.
