The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed profound surprise at the Supreme Court’s decision, which upheld Bola Tinubu as the victor of the presidential election held on February 25, 2023.
In a statement issued after the Supreme Court’s ruling, the PDP noted that a significant portion of Nigerians is deeply alarmed, disappointed, and extremely concerned about the reasoning of the Supreme Court, which the PDP believes is in contradiction to the explicit provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), the Electoral Act of 2022, and the guidelines and regulations issued by INEC for conducting the election.
The PDP asserted that the verdict was a disheartening development for Nigeria’s democracy, alleging that the Supreme Court did not uphold the legal provisions.
The statement, signed by Debo Ologunagba, states: “Nigerians had a genuine expectation that the Supreme Court would uphold and protect the clear stipulations of the 1999 Constitution regarding the qualifications and minimum requirements for a presidential election winner in Nigeria, especially concerning the necessary statutory 25% of votes in the FCT. Issues related to the violation of electoral rules and guidelines, blatant manipulation, and alterations of election results by the APC. Nigerians are still bewildered by how the Supreme Court overlooked the serious issues of forgery, falsehood, and perjury in favor of technicalities.
“The widespread disappointment and sense of despair across the country upon the delivery of the judgment is a foreboding sign of a grim situation that could have serious consequences due to the disillusionment it has generated.
“This Supreme Court judgment has undeniably shaken the trust of Nigerians in the judiciary, particularly the Supreme Court, which is seen as the last resort for the common man.”
According to the statement, the PDP remains undaunted. The opposition party encouraged Nigerians not to be disheartened or let the judgment deter them from their collective pursuit of establishing a credible electoral system that can ensure a government that genuinely derives its legitimacy from the people.
