The acting Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive for stringent security measures nationwide in response to the planned protests by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) during the week.
The Force Headquarters released a statement on Tuesday expressing the IG’s deep concern regarding the planned nationwide protests by the labour unions. While recognizing the right to peaceful protest, the IG appealed to all parties involved to ensure that the demonstrations are conducted peacefully to prevent them from being hijacked by miscreants, as seen in previous protests in major cities.
The police boss acknowledged the grievances raised by the labour unions and stressed the importance of constructive dialogue to address these issues. He called on stakeholders, including the NLC, TUC, and civil society groups, to embrace peaceful dialogue as the most effective means of resolving grievances. The IG also emphasized the police’s commitment to creating a secure environment for open dialogue and understanding to exercise civil rights smoothly.
The IG has instructed the Commissioners of Police in various commands and supervisory Assistant Inspectors-General of Police to engage in fruitful discussions with the NLC/TUC leadership to foster understanding and reach common ground on the planned protests.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its dedication to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens during the period of the planned protests, with measures in place to facilitate their peaceful conduct. The police warned against violence and declared that any attempts to exploit the situation for violent purposes such as vandalism, gangsterism, and extortion would be met with a firm and lawful response. The police assured the public that they would not tolerate any acts that threaten the peace and well-being of the country.
In anticipation of potential challenges posed by the planned protests, the Nigeria Police Force is fully prepared to deploy all available resources to maintain law and order and protect the lives and property of citizens. The IG called on all officers to remain vigilant, professional, and uphold the highest standards of conduct during this period.
