Mrs. Beatrice Jedy-Agba, the Solicitor-General of the Federation, responded to a letter from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) through Falana & Falana’s Chambers, clarifying that the ministry did not threaten the NLC over the planned strike. In the letter addressed to the NLC’s counsel, she explained that the ministry simply drew the attention of the NLC to a pending court order.
The letter, also copied to other authorities, emphasized that there was no threat of contempt of court in the ministry’s clarification and that parties are expected to maintain the status quo even without a restraining order.
Mrs. Jedy-Agba noted that peaceful protests and police permits were not in contention, but she raised concerns about the NLC’s proposed nationwide action related to fuel price increase, stating that it is inappropriate to lead public protests on matters currently before the court. She referenced media reports indicating that the NLC’s planned action went beyond peaceful protests and could endanger public peace and essential services.
She reminded the NLC’s counsel that peaceful protests do not justify disrupting or shutting down essential services, which is tantamount to a strike action. Mrs. Jedy-Agba urged them to advise their clients accordingly based on the legal perspective provided in the letter.
