Sani Shinkafi, the former chairman of the Committee on Prosecution of Bandits Related Offences in Zamfara State, issued a recommendation on Monday, urging the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to refrain from assigning corps members to states currently plagued by persistent bandit attacks.
In his view, states such as Zamfara, Kebbi, and Sokoto should be excluded from corps member deployments. He conveyed this viewpoint during an interview on the breakfast program of Channels Television.
It’s worth noting that just two weeks ago, armed bandits abducted eight NYSC members on a highway in Zamfara.
Shinkafi also advised Zamfara State’s Governor, Dauda Lawal, to engage in a “peace dialogue” with repentant bandits. He emphasized that the approach adopted by the administration of Lawal’s predecessor, Bello Matawalle, which involved dialogue with the terrorists, had proven beneficial in securing the release of abductees in the state.
He expressed deep concern, stating, “There is no safe place in any of the 14 local governments in Zamfara; many lives are lost, and numerous individuals are kidnapped.”
