In order to address the issue of unemployment in Nigeria, Brigadier General Yusha’u Dogara Ahmed, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has encouraged Corps Members to acquire vocational skills through the NYSC’s Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program.
The importance of skill acquisition as the key solution to unemployment was emphasized by Ahmed during his speeches at the Katsina State Orientation Camp and the NYSC Borno State Orientation Camp, as stated in a press release by Eddy Megwa, the NYSC Director of Press and Public Relations.
The NYSC DG highlighted the significance of in-camp training for all Corps Members, which aims to expose them to entrepreneurship during their three-week Orientation period. He urged them to learn from the SAED program, take advantage of it, and develop their potential to achieve financial independence and become employers of labor. Ahmed explained that the post-camp training period would further enhance their skills and prepare them for self-employment.
Furthermore, the Director General cautioned Corps Members about the NYSC dress code, emphasizing that any violations would be treated as offenses. He emphasized the importance of dressing appropriately and warned that improper dressing would result in sanctions and restricted access to NYSC offices.
Ahmed also encouraged Corps Members to actively engage in camp activities and utilize the four cardinal programs of the NYSC (Orientation Course, Primary Assignment, Community Development Service, and Winding-Up/Passing-Out) to build relationships and make a positive impact on their host communities.
During briefings by state coordinators, Mrs. Aisha Muhammad, the NYSC Katsina State Coordinator, reported that all 1,129 registered Corps Members, consisting of 551 males and 578 females, had smoothly adapted to their new environment and were in high spirits.
Similarly, Mr. Mohammed Adamu Jiya, the NYSC Borno State Coordinator, highlighted the effective teamwork among camp officials, leading to the smooth progress of Orientation Camp activities.
