Gboyega Akosile, Chief Press Secretary to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has stated that his principal’s visit to Bishop David Oyedepo, the founder of the Living Faith Church International, commonly known as Winners’ Chapel, had nothing to do with politics.
Sanwo-Olu had shared an image of himself and Oyedepo on his verified Twitter profile on Tuesday with the caption that read, “Yesterday was definitely a memorable day as I met with a man after God’s own heart, a man who has dedicated his life to the service of God and mankind. I maintain a high regard for this well respected man of God. Bishop David Oyedepo is the founder of the Living Faith Church Worldwide (Winners Chapel) and the presiding Bishop of the Faith Tabernacle in Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria.
Some many Nigerians reacted by saying that the governor has been travelling from church to church in a desperate attempt to gain votes ahead of Saturday’s poll.
Nevertheless, in response to a question about the purpose of the visit, the governor’s CPS, Akosile, was quoted by Daily Independent on Tuesday as saying that linking Sanwo-Olu’s visit to politics was absurd since he had always visited Oyedepo when there was no election.
“No, the governor’s visit has nothing to do with politics,” Akosile replied. If you’ve been following Governor Sanwo-Olu’s actions, you’ve noticed that he’s a devout Christian. He is a man who values relationships, especially with Church leaders.
“He has paid visits to Bishop Oyedepo on numerous occasions in the past when there was no election and this particular visit is not an exception.
“Bishop Oyedepo is a man of God whom the Governor really admires. He has benefited from his scriptural teachings and blessings. It is absurd to link the Governor’s visit with politics or elections. No, it doesn’t.”
Sanwo-Olu is vying for re-election as a second-term governor of Lagos State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress in Saturday’s governorship and State Assembly elections.
The Labour Party’s triumph against the APC’s Bola Tinubu in Lagos’ presidential election on February 25 introduced a new twist to Lagos politics, with Sanwo-dominant Olu’s party perceived to be in disarray.
