Rivers crisis: Wike admits, says it’s about ensuring his political relevance

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), admitted on Tuesday that the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State is primarily cantered around maintaining control of his political stronghold to secure his continued relevance in the country.

Previously, a group of lawmakers loyal to Wike in the Rivers Assembly had plunged the state into political chaos by attempting to impeach Siminalayi Fubara, the successor to the FCT Minister. It was widely believed that these lawmakers were acting on Wike’s behalf, as he had played a role in Fubara’s appointment as his successor.

In a meeting with South-South leaders at his office in Abuja, Wike essentially acknowledged his involvement in the crisis while emphasizing the importance of safeguarding his political base to sustain his political significance. He refuted claims that the move against Fubara was driven by ethnic considerations, asserting that he would not permit anyone to wrest his political support from him, as that would signify a loss of his political standing.

Wike also brushed off the criticism surrounding the matter, stating that he wasn’t overly concerned about what he described as a smear campaign against him. He emphasized that all politicians aspire to maintain their political relevance and safeguard their political infrastructure, comparing it to a fundamental aspect of the political landscape.

Regarding the internal conflicts within his party, Wike acknowledged that such disputes are typical in politics and would be addressed through the party’s internal mechanisms. He asserted that the party is well-equipped to handle its internal problems, emphasizing that it’s not an issue related to ethnicity.

Furthermore, Wike noted that the matter is an internal party affair and would ultimately be resolved through the party’s procedures.

President Bola Tinubu and the PDP Governors’ Forum have stepped in to mediate the dispute between the Minister and Fubara.
