According to the medical professionals, following the intervention of the Senate President, who holds the position of the third highest official in the country, and the assurances provided by him, they have collectively decided to cancel the proposed nationwide protest. Additionally, the final verdict regarding the ongoing strike will be made at a later time.
This resolution emerged after a private meeting held with the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, along with other Senate leaders. Following this discussion, Dr. Emeka Innocent Orji, the National President of the doctors’ association, addressed reporters and shared, “We engaged in a highly productive discussion with the Senate, led by the Senate President. Based on our interactions, we are optimistic that presenting our deliberations to the National Executive Council will yield positive outcomes within the next 24 hours.”
Dr. Orji expressed confidence in the Senate President’s commitment and actions, which convinced them of potential progress. He confirmed, “Due to the Senate President’s involvement, as a high-ranking official, and the reassurance he extended to us, we have decided to call off the scheduled nationwide protest. The resolution on continuing the ongoing strike will be made once we convene, as he assured.”
Senator Akpabio, in his response, conveyed gratitude to the medical practitioners for their decision to cancel both the intended public demonstration and the strike efforts. He acknowledged, “On behalf of the Senate, I express our appreciation for your choice to not only abandon the proposed protest but also to cease the strike for the betterment of the suffering population.”
Akpabio assured the doctors that their concerns have been duly acknowledged and promised swift action once a Health Minister is appointed. He highlighted the administration’s favourable disposition towards medical professionals and emphasized the significant representation of doctors within the President Bola Tinubu-led government.
The Senate President underscored the importance of avoiding medical practitioners’ strikes due to their potential to disrupt society. He pledged the Senate’s determination to use dialogues and consultations with relevant authorities to reach an agreeable resolution to the ongoing dispute.
