Austin Faani, a renowned Nigerian filmmaker and the husband of actress Chacha Eke, has expressed his belief that religion has done more harm than good in Africa.
Faani made this assertion while discussing some of the challenges he faced when his wife experienced a period of mental illness. Speaking during an event organized by the Meticulous People Foundation Outreach, an organization dedicated to addressing mental health issues and founded by Chacha Eke, Faani recounted an incident where a pastor deceived him into performing a goat sacrifice in an attempt to cure his wife.
Chacha Eke shared a video of the event on her Instagram page, along with the caption: “Destiny knew that I would require ‘rescue,’ and so it brought ‘Austin Faani’ into my life.”
Faani explained, “Although I consider myself a deeply religious individual, I hold the perspective that religion has caused more harm than good to the African continent. In November 2012, I took my wife to a church because I had informed the pastor that my father-in-law had made significant offerings for her, including the sacrifice of several cows.
The pastor then advised me to offer a sacrifice as well. In response, I went to Abraka market and purchased a large goat, hoping it would aid her healing. However, the situation remained unchanged in spite of these efforts.”
