The acting Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has declared that checkpoints remain an integral aspect of the Nigeria Police Force’s operations. He underscored their significance as vibrant components of visibility policing, essential for effectively maintaining law and order within the modern Nigerian society.
In a bid to enhance the efficiency of these checkpoints, Egbetokun has directed the deployment of the Monitoring Unit and X-Squad operatives. These units, in collaboration with senior officers overseeing them, are tasked with conducting comprehensive evaluations of key checkpoints situated along the highways.
Egbetokun reasserted his administration’s unwavering commitment to instilling a sense of order and responsibility on the nation’s roads and within police operations. He emphasized that the NPF is wholly dedicated to reestablishing order, fostering a sense of trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve, and upholding ethical standards.
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, conveyed this message in a communication on Wednesday night that was obtained by our correspondent.
Adejobi conveyed, “Recognizing the significance of safe and efficient road networks, the IG has directed the enhanced Monitoring Unit and X-Squad operatives, working in tandem with supervisory senior officers, to meticulously assess key checkpoints along our highways. This initiative is aimed at ensuring strategic and effective placement of checkpoints, devoid of any corrupt practices or extortion, while minimizing inconveniences to the public and maintaining public safety.
“In response to concerns about checkpoints causing disruptions to traffic flow and the possibility of inappropriate conduct by officers, the IG reaffirmed that checkpoints, though occasionally causing inconvenience, are indispensable elements of visibility policing, which plays a pivotal role in maintaining effective policing in our modern society.
“The IG asserted that these checkpoints and related operations are designed to achieve anti-crime objectives. He urged the public to collaborate with law enforcement operatives for the greater good, and assured that supervisory officers have been instructed to educate and oversee their personnel, ensuring adherence to principles of decency and professionalism in all operations. This includes promoting respectful and professional conduct among officers and optimizing the utilization of technology and intelligence to enhance operational efficacy.”
Furthermore, Egbetokun encouraged citizens to share their feedback, experiences, and suggestions with the police. He expressed the NPF’s unyielding commitment to ensuring the safety and security of individuals using the country’s highways. He also urged the public to consistently cooperate with law enforcement and other security personnel during operations.
