The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has demanded that the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Abiodun Alamutu, publicly release the report on the allegation of vote buying made against the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its governorship candidate, Dapo Abiodun, during the March 18 governorship election. The PDP gave the Commissioner of Police a 72-hour ultimatum to comply with their request.
Dr Sikirulai Ogundele, the State Chairman of the PDP, expressed the party’s discomfort with the reluctance of the State Police command to make the report public. Ogundele alleged that Governor Abiodun and the APC were pressuring and threatening the Commissioner of Police and his officers to suppress and distort the findings of the investigation ordered by the former Inspector General of Police, Baba Alkali, in response to the PDP’s petition.
According to Ogundele, the investigation had uncovered evidence of the diversion of Ogun State funds for vote buying during the election. He accused Governor Abiodun of attempting to suppress the report to conceal the alleged atrocities committed by his administration and its supporters. Ogundele criticized the police for releasing an interim report on an APC petition while withholding the findings of their own investigation.
The PDP also criticized the Federal Ministry of Justice for allegedly conducting itself unprofessionally by charging their governorship candidate, Adebutu, and other supporters based on an incomplete investigation report. Ogundele argued that the power to prosecute electoral offences rests exclusively with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and accused the Federal Ministry of Justice of partisan actions aimed at influencing the ongoing petition against Governor Abiodun and the APC at the Ogun State Governorship Election Tribunal.
The PDP called on the police in Ogun State to submit the report of their investigation without distortion or manipulation. They warned against tampering with the findings and urged the Inspector General of Police to ensure that those responsible for criminal acts, including looting state funds, ballot box snatching, and violence against PDP supporters, are held accountable.
