The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a challenge to the state government to publicly disclose the names and account details of the recently discovered ghost workers in the public service.
The opposition party argues that the publication of such information is necessary to substantiate the claims and convince them of the validity of the discoveries.
The challenge was raised by Elder Amah Abraham, the Vice Chairman of the Abia PDP, who expressed skepticism regarding the news that 2,300 ghost workers had been uncovered and N220 million saved. Abraham accused Governor Alex Otti and his party, the Labour Party (LP), of using this story as a diversionary tactic and an attempt to gain public sympathy.
In a statement, Abraham emphasized that without concrete evidence such as names, bank verification numbers (BVN), addresses, and details of the ministries, departments, and agencies where the ghost workers were employed, the claims remain unsubstantiated. He urged Governor Otti and his team to publish the information to shame the culprits and potentially bring them to justice.
Abraham also noted that during the administration of former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, payments were made through dedicated bank accounts with BVNs and personal information, rather than cash transactions.
When contacted for comments, Ferdinand Ekeoma, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Otti, did not respond to calls or messages.
A prominent member of the Labour Party, who preferred to remain anonymous, accused the PDP of self-imposed guilt and advised them to allow Governor Otti to address the issue of ghost workers in the state’s civil service.
