Senator Ajibola Basiru, the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has criticized Pastor Tunde Bakare, the serving overseer of Citadel Global Community Church, for what he perceives as Bakare’s incompetence to speak on President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms. Basiru made these comments during his appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Sunday evening.
In a nationwide broadcast, Bakare had stirred controversy by characterizing ’emilokan,’ a slogan introduced by Tinubu during the 2023 election campaign, as emblematic of authoritarianism. He recalled warning Nigerians in January about this type of political approach. Bakare further noted that though the president had announced palliative measures, these alone could not address the underlying issues.
Responding to Bakare’s statement, Basiru asserted that Bakare lacked the necessary expertise to speak authoritatively on matters outside his field.
“In reference to Pastor Bakare’s remarks, I feel compelled to comment. While I do not view him as a politician, and I say this with respect, I question his competence to make the statements he has made,” Basiru stated.
He emphasized that addressing economic dysfunctions and imbalances goes beyond merely discussing palliative measures, and the APC is not restricting their approach to only palliatives.
Pressed to clarify his assertion about Bakare’s competence, Basiru clarified that being a Nigerian does not automatically make one an authority on all issues.
“I mean competence in relation to the topic he is discussing. Possessing ideas does not necessarily equate to competence in articulating those ideas. However, as a citizen, he is entitled to express his opinions,” Basiru added.
