Following the appointment of Olayemi Michael Cardoso as the new Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria on Friday, here is a brief overview of the new head of the apex bank.
Cardoso takes over from Folashodun Shonubi, who held the position on an acting basis following the suspension of Godwin Emefiele on June 9.
PROFILE
Mr. Cardoso, a native of Lagos State, holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration and Management from Harvard University.
He made history as the inaugural commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget in Lagos State when civilian democracy was restored in 1999, during Tinubu’s tenure as governor.
Cardoso boasts extensive experience in the banking sector, having worked as a professional banker with institutions such as Chase Bank, Citibank, and Citizens International Bank, among others. He held the position of Vice-President at Citibank and served as an executive director at Citizens International Bank.
Furthermore, Cardoso has served on the boards of various companies, including MRS Oil Nigeria PLC. Additionally, he has held the role of Managing Partner at FBC Associates Limited.
