Dapo Abiodun, the Governor of Ogun State, has announced the utilization of advanced technologies such as drones, helicopters, and other innovative solutions to effectively address security challenges within the state.
The Governor made this declaration during a courtesy visit by Major General Mohammad Usman, the new General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 81 Division, which encompasses Ogun and Lagos States. The meeting took place at the Governor’s office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Wednesday.
Abiodun highlighted that the continuous influx of people to the state, attributed to its strategic positioning as a hub for industry, religion, and education in the country, has placed significant strain on the state’s security framework. Consequently, he emphasized the imperative of incorporating technology to combat security threats.
He articulated, “Recently, we have acquired drones designed for aerial surveillance. Recognizing the impossibility of deploying sufficient personnel to cover all vulnerable areas, these drones serve to preempt criminal activities by identifying potential crime scenes, allowing for timely intervention.”
He further revealed, “We’ve also secured the deployment of a police helicopter to assist our law enforcement agencies. This helicopter, stationed within the state, can swiftly respond to distress calls, particularly in kidnapping scenarios. Its rapid arrival restricts the movement of perpetrators, facilitating prompt security intervention.”
Abiodun noted that his administration rejuvenated Operation Mesa (OP-MESA) and established a task force responsible for patrolling the Ogun State stretch of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, effectively curbing kidnapping incidents along that corridor.
In recognition of the Nigerian Army and various security forces’ unwavering dedication, the Governor expressed gratitude for their contributions, which have contributed to Ogun State’s recognition as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful regions.
He also disclosed intentions to distribute relief materials to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal, underscoring the military’s role in ensuring the orderly and secure distribution of these resources.
General Usman, in his address, extended appreciation for the Governor’s support toward the armed forces and security agencies. He urged for enhanced empowerment of personnel stationed at the Forward Operation Base along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, enabling them to more effectively combat kidnapping.
Emphasizing the necessity of close collaboration between the government and security forces, General Usman stressed the importance of pre-empting security threats to prevent the proliferation of insecurity experienced in other parts of the country from taking root in the South West region.
