Peter Obi, the leader of the Labour Party, announced on Monday that if his running partner, Datti Baba-Ahmed, is discovered to be corrupt, he will withdraw from the 2023 presidential election.
Obi maintained that Baba-Ahmed never compromised his status as a member of the National Assembly when addressing questions at Chatham House in London.
“We will combat corruption,” he declared. “Datti holds the distinction of being the only National Assembly member to decline to purchase government property when it was made available to all members. You can check his background; if you discover any instances in which he compromises his position by placing himself in a transactional position, I’ll cease.
“I have governed a state for eight years, check the record, I have challenged everybody, I am the only governor, till today, who the day I left office I was not owing salaries or pension or gratuity or any contractor or any supplier and I left money in three banks in Nigeria, Access Bank of Nigeria, Fidelity Bank of Nigeria, and Diamond Bank of Nigeria,” he said.
“Small nations have done it. How did India, with 1.4 billion people, deal with the issue of health, and how did Indonesia deal with it? If other countries have done it successfully, we must learn from them; there is nothing wrong with learning from others if you do not know how to do it.
“Let me assure you what we have been campaigning on, in our campaign we have heard them claim, we do not have structure. That is the edifice we are attempting to demolish, the criminal structure that has kept Nigeria hostage.
The edifice that has impoverished Nigeria will no longer exist; we will demolish it.
“We are going to turn around the electricity industry. Nigeria generates around 60,000 megawatts of power for a population of 200 million people. South Africa is the second largest economy in terms of population, with 60,000 million people generating around 50,000MW, and South Africa has declared a state of emergency in electricity in the previous two to three years, stating that anybody can generate approximately 100MW without a license.”
