Nigerians take too much rubbish from politicians — Sanusi

The former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, has emphasized that Nigerians take too much of rubbish from politicians, urging the public not to be intimidated by political leaders.

Sanusi highlighted that failing to hold politicians accountable could jeopardize the prospects of future generations having a stable nation to call their own.

Having previously served as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Sanusi underscored that the decision of many Nigerians not to engage in politics doesn’t diminish their worth, and he criticized the prevalent fear that prevents citizens from speaking up within their comfort zones.

In a widely circulated video, Sanusi, a technocrat, expressed, “We should not allow ourselves to be cowed by anyone’s position as president or governor, and we should not hesitate to challenge them when they’re wrong.”

He pointed out, “We all have diverse roles to play. Had I ventured into politics, I might have become a president or governor, given my access. However, opting out of politics does not render me subservient. This is a vital lesson for all Nigerians.”

Sanusi criticized the habit of tolerating disrespect, stating, “We permit too much abuse, and our reluctance to step beyond our comfort zones hampers us.”

He cautioned that if current political trends persist unchecked, succeeding generations may find themselves without a nation to inherit.

Sanusi’s message to the non-political population was resolute: “If you’re not directly involved in politics, it’s still your responsibility to hold those in political positions accountable.”

Although this path may be challenging, Sanusi emphasized that confronting ineptitude in the face of criticism should be regarded as a badge of honour, especially when dealing with those who harbour animosity.

In the midst of a distorted environment, one cannot maintain comfort or a sense of normalcy. Sanusi urged young people to take charge of their nation’s destiny, stating, “This is your country, your future. Join us in shaping this nation for the generations that follow.”
