Renowned social activist and creator of humorous skits, Debo Adebayo, widely recognized as Mr Macaroni, has strongly criticized the leadership of the National Assembly for leading opulent lives while Nigerians grapple with extreme hardship.
Macaroni expressed deep dismay that while citizens endure severe challenges, their leaders are indulging in extravagance, even using public funds for their own leisure.
His response was prompted by a circulating video wherein the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, announced during a plenary session that “a token has been sent to their various accounts to enable them enjoy their holiday.”
This occurrence has elicited numerous negative reactions from Nigerians.
In a post shared on his social media platform on Wednesday, the social activist questioned the logic behind impoverished Nigerians footing the bill for their leaders’ lavish lifestyles.
“The Senate President has allocated lavish blessings from the already insufficient resources of over 200 million citizens for himself and his fellow well-off colleagues in the National Assembly.
“These are the very leaders who have called upon struggling Nigerians to make sacrifices for the betterment of the country. So, while Nigerians are enduring excruciating hardships, our leaders are channeling funds to indulge themselves during holidays.
“Shouldn’t it be our leaders who make the sacrifices, rather than the ordinary people?
“Do our leaders comprehend that leadership entails serving, acting selflessly, and making sacrifices?
“Why must Nigeria’s underprivileged populace bear the cost of their leaders’ extravagant way of life? Why? This is not what leadership entails!”
