Dr. Anthony Anuforo, the leader of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital chapter of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), has assured the public that their ongoing strike will end once the Federal Government fulfills their salary payment.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ile-Ife on Tuesday, Dr. Anuforo provided the assurance. He stated that the Ile-Ife branch of NARD has been in discussions with the university management since March 2023, bringing their attention to the issue of unpaid salaries. Some doctors have reportedly not received their salaries since January 2023.
Dr. Anuforo expressed appreciation for the previous interim management’s efforts in pursuing the payment of salaries and pledged that his team would continue these efforts. He emphasized that the strike would motivate the Federal Government to expedite the payment and address other outstanding allowances.
He further urged the government to prioritize the health sector by increasing the budgetary allocation for healthcare. Dr. Anuforo emphasized that if the government takes care of the members of NARD, the doctors, in turn, will be able to provide quality care to patients.
During the strike period, only consultants are attending to patients, according to NAN reports.
