The Presidential Election Petition Court Tribunal, or PEPC, has had its inaugural session, a procedural ritual that precedes the actual hearing of petitions seeking to nullify the outcome of the presidential election in 2023.
The session revealed a five-member panel of Court of Appeal Justices who would hear and decide all five cases contesting the proclamation of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of the governing All Progressives Congress, APC, as presidential election winner.
The panel will be led by Justice Haruna Tsammani, the Presiding Justice (PJ) of the Court of Appeal’s Abuja Division. Other members of the panel include Justice Stephen Adah (PJ Asaba Division), Justice Monsurat Bolaji-Yusuf (Asaba Division), Justice Boluokuromo Ugo (Kano Division), and Justice Abba.
In his opening remarks, Presiding Justice Tsammani urged lawyers for all petitioners to avoid making dramatic comments, emphasizing that the court would not accept time-wasting tactics or technicalities.
“As we commence hearing the petitions, let us avoid making sensational comments,” he remarked. Consider the safety and interests of the country first and foremost.
“We should avoid wasting time on frivolous applications and objections so that we can focus on the substance of the case rather than frivolous technicalities.”
“Let us cooperate together so that everyone is satisfied that justice has been done.”
Responding, lead counsel to the President-elect, Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN, promised the court of his team’s full cooperation, stating that the matter needed to be resolved without resorting to unnecessary technicalities.
Similarly, Chief Chris Uche, SAN, the leader of the legal team defending the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential nominee, Atiku Abubakar, said they will do all necessary to help the court achieve justice.
