The Managing Director of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), Mohammed Alkali, has announced that they are collaborating closely with the University of Maiduguri and other stakeholders to establish a Boko Haram museum.

During the commemoration of the International Day of Peace 2023 in Maiduguri, where he was also honoured with a ‘Peace Ambassador Award,’ Alkali revealed their intention to create a Boko Haram museum. This museum aims to present the narratives of the Boko Haram insurgency in a positive light, with the goal of fostering social change.

The event took place at the Elkanemi Hall at the University of Maiduguri, with Professor Aliyu Shugaba, the Vice Chancellor, serving as the Chief Host.

“We are in discussions with the university and other stakeholders to determine the establishment of the museum, which will preserve relics and literature to recount the stories for future generations,” Alkali stated.

He emphasized that the museum would provide an opportunity for stakeholders to present the narratives in a positive manner, enabling future generations to comprehend the consequences of war in the region and the entire country.

Alkali noted that the NEDC is committed to providing support within its mandate to combat violent extremism in the region.

“I also noticed some artefacts on display, and I inquired about them. Ambassador Ahmed Shehu informed me that these were innovative ideas from some of our young people. We will assess them and provide support to any project that holds merit,” he added.

Earlier, Ahmed Shehu, the President of the Peace Ambassadors Centre for Humanitarian Aid and Empowerment, highlighted that these innovative creations were the work of young children who had not yet attended formal schooling. Their talents and inventions had been discovered through a talent hunt, and their contributions were remarkable despite their lack of formal education.

A few years ago, one of these talented individuals developed a solar-powered device, and today, his company is successfully competing in the Nigerian manufacturing sector,” he stated.

He praised the NEDC for providing timely assistance to this young talent and also presented the Peace Ambassador Award to the Managing Director of the commission, Ahmed Goni Alkali.
