The National Assembly has made a heartfelt plea to Organised Labour, urging them to reconsider their decision to proceed with a national industrial action scheduled for Wednesday. Hon. Adegboyega Adefarati, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Labour, Employment, and Productivity, made this appeal during a conversation with journalists in Akure, Ondo State’s capital.
Adefarati, representing Akoko South West/South East federal constituency in the House, expressed deep concern over the potential adverse effects the planned industrial action could have on ordinary Nigerians, especially those already grappling with economic hardships.
The lawmaker emphasized that President Bola Tinubu and Speaker, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abass, are fully aware of the prevailing circumstances and are actively engaged in addressing the pertinent issues in a comprehensive manner.
In addition to the appeal to Organised Labour, Adefarati also addressed the ongoing doctors’ strike. He stressed that while pressing forward with their demands, the President of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) should consider the plight of Nigerians, as a balanced approach is needed to safeguard both the welfare of doctors and the well-being of the populace.
Adefarati assured the public that the government is open to negotiations and dialogue, aiming for a stable and harmonious relationship between workers and the government, which he believes is essential for development.
He highlighted various initiatives that the government is planning to provide succor and solutions to the impact of the subsidy removal. Moreover, he underscored the need to focus on improving social services in crucial areas such as education, transportation, and health to move the country forward rather than resorting to condemnation or further exacerbating the challenges faced by the people.
