The Ebonyi State Police Command has cautioned aggrieved political parties and supporters in the state to avoid protests and breaches of public peace ahead of Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s inauguration as President of Nigeria and Francis Nwifuru as Governor of Ebonyi State on May 29.

Faleye Olaleye, the Commissioner of Police, issued the warning in a statement.

SP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, the police spokesman, signed the statement, which was made accessible to journalists in Abakaliki on Monday.

Olaleye vowed that police would deal extremely with any person(s) or group of people who violated the order or purposefully disrupted peace and order at the forthcoming inaugurations of the president-elect and governor-elect.

“The Command wishes to notify the general public that all forms of protest before, during, and after the May 29th 2023 inauguration by any aggrieved party or supporters of the recently concluded gubernatorial, national, and state House of Assembly elections will not be tolerated,” the statement reads in part.

“This is against the backdrop of an intelligence report indicating that some individuals or groups of people are planning to protest, causing insecurity in the state.”

“Aggrieved individuals or groups of people should have faith in the court, and as such, they should await the outcome of the tribunal verdict on the cases that are already in court.”

“The Command will not hesitate to take decisive action against any individual(s) or group of people who violate this order or purposefully cause the breakdown of law and order in any manner or form.” Those responsible will be detained and subjected to the full force of the law, as police personnel have been strategically stationed and ordered to guarantee complete enforcement.”

CP Olaleye also urged members of the public to obey the law, avoid all forms of violence, and cooperate with security services, as measures have been put in place to safeguard residents’ lives and property.

He also reminded the citizens of the state of the ongoing commitment to carry out its obligations professionally in accordance with constitutional requirements and other laws in place.
