Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s vice presidential candidate, has promised that the party will win Lagos state in the February 25th presidential election.
On Tuesday, Baba-Ahmed stated this in an interview on Channels Television’s The 2023 Verdict.
He believes that a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket will not work in Nigeria due to the country’s multi-ethnicity.
Baba-Ahmed dismissed the ruling All Progressives Congress’s (APC) same-faith ticket.
“The same reason Tinubu is not the vice president of Nigeria now is the same reason he cannot be president,” he remarked.
“What couldn’t happen in 2015 when Buhari requested Tinubu for any nomination whatsoever – because that configuration has passed. It is no longer viable in Nigeria. [A] Muslim-Muslim ticket is no longer applicable.
Baba-Ahmed emphasized the importance of faith in Nigeria’s political system, claiming that the country’s sociopolitical makeup is not accidental.
“The creator of the heavens and the earth does not make errors,” he stated. This is the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as duly filed and registered with the United Nations.”
“It’s not the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Vatican, Iran, Libya, or Mauritania, for example. It’s a federal republic, and God didn’t make a mistake by including all 250 [tribes] in it.
“You find other countries almost entirely – one faith, one language, one group. Not so in Nigeria, where there are at least 250 [tribes] and two major competing religions. And we say it’s not a mistake on the part of our creator.”
He claims that 15 of the 18 political parties that ran for presidential candidates have fallen behind.
He went on to suggest that two of the other three had “misconfigured themselves,” having “fallen out of alignment with the dictates of winning elections in Nigeria.”
