The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has postponed the gubernatorial and state assembly elections scheduled for March 11 to March 18 due to its failure to commence the reconfiguration of the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System, BVAS, machines on time.
The Court of Appeal handed the commission permission yesterday to reconfigure the BVAS used for the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly elections in preparation for the state elections.
“This is to advise you that the House of Assembly election has been officially postponed to Saturday 18/02/2023,” stated Funke Segun-Osifeso, INEC’s Chief of Voter Education, Publicity, Gender, and Civil Society Organization in Ondo State, in confirming the postponement.
“As a result, the distribution exercise scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed. I apologize for the inconvenience.”
Last week, the court stopped INEC from tampering with the BVAS used in last Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections.
Obi’s team of lawyers, led by Mr Alex Ejesieme, SAN, requested six major reliefs in his motion, while Atiku’s lawyer, Adedamola Faloku, sought seven prayers from the tribunal.
“An order granting the applicants’ permission to perform electronic scanning and make photocopies of voter’s registration, ballot papers used in the conduct of the election for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria held on the 25th day of February 2023,” the plaintiffs requested.
“An order granting the applicants permission to carry out the Digital Forensic Investigation of BVAS machines used in the conduct of the election for the Office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on February 25, 2023.”
The plaintiffs also requested an injunction prohibiting “the First Respondent from tampering with the information embedded in the BVAS machines until the necessary inspection was done and Certified True Copies of were issued”.
