A former Minister of Aviation and a prominent member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Osita Chidoka, has strongly criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its failure to electronically transmit election results in real-time during the 2023 general elections.
Chidoka, during an appearance on Channels TV Politics Today on Sunday, expressed deep disappointment in INEC’s performance, particularly in light of the promises made leading up to the Anambra, Ekiti, and Osun gubernatorial elections. He characterized INEC’s performance during these elections as a “monumental disgrace” and noted that it was a source of shame for him as a Nigerian.
He remarked, “INEC is a monumental disgrace; it is an organization that I am ashamed to be associated with as a Nigerian. They made promises with the Anambra, Ekiti, and Osun elections.”
Chidoka explained that he had advocated for third-party verification of the INEC system before the elections to ensure that any potential glitches on election day could be avoided. However, on the actual election day, INEC reported a glitch in their system.
He further criticized INEC for going to court to argue that non-compliance with its regulations should not be grounds for canceling an election, even after failing to adequately test their system.
Chidoka pointed out that if INEC had successfully transmitted the election results in real-time, there would have been no need for political parties to resort to legal action.
He concluded by suggesting that if “the right thing was done,” there was a possibility that President Tinubu might have emerged as the election winner.
