Following a surge of insecurity in several parts of the nation, the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has announced that elections would not take place in the 240 polling units spread across 28 states.
Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of INEC, said this on Monday at a meeting with political party leaders.
“There are 240 polling units without registered voters split throughout 28 states and the FCT,” he explained. Except for Taraba and Imo states, which have 34 and 38 polling units, they range from one to twelve polling units in the states as FCT.
“No new registrant chose the polling units and no voter showed interest to transfer to them during the last CVR mainly for security concerns. This signifies that no elections will be held in these polling units”.
Meanwhile, the Inter-Party Advisory Council IPAC has spoken out against any election postponement, stating that the elections should not be moved under any circumstances.
“Mr. Chairman, this election should not be postponed under any circumstances,” stated IPAC chairman Sani Yabagi.
