Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the February 25 election, has stated that the campaign he led prior to the 2023 general election was not based on ethnicity or religion.
Obi stated this in a statement issued on Tuesday in response to charges leveled against the Minister of Communication and Culture, Lai Mohammed.
At a media meeting in Washington, DC, Mohammed accused Obi of treason, which the LP candidate condemned as part of a campaign of slander against him.
“It is unfortunate that these consistent efforts to portray me quite contrary to what I am and my core values are coming from such high quarters,” Obi stated.
Minister Lai’s accusation that I am stoking insurrection is totally false and malicious.
“I have never discussed or urged anybody to undermine the Nigerian state; I have never sponsored or preached any anti-Nigerian-state action.” Those behind these efforts have increasingly exploited their official positions and agents to make false allegations against me.
“I have always advocated for peace and issue-based campaigns, and I have never campaigned on the basis of ethnicity or religion.” I believe in due process and am currently seeking redress in court.”
The former Anambra State governor then challenged individuals involved in “this demarketing process to cease presenting Nigeria in such a bad way.”
