Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra state said he has scheduled a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari and is waiting for an appointment to facilitate the immediate release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Soludo maintained his resolve to ensure Kanu’s release in a quarterly statewide briefing on his government’s activities on Monday.
He stated that he planned to discuss security challenges in the South East, notably Kanu’s release, during his meeting with Buhari.
Remember that at the flag off of his party’s All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) campaigns in Awka, the governor asked for Kanu’s freedom, pledging to act as surety for Kanu if the federal government found it difficult to release him unconditionally.
However, in response to Soludo’s appeal, Attorney General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami stated that Soludo just made a statement and had not applied to the court or his office for Kanu’s release.
Soludo stated that he hopes to see Buhari and discuss the importance of Kanu’s release with him.
Kanu’s release, according to Soludo, would allow him to act in areas where some groups use secessionist agitation to perpetuate criminality.
“In the case of Nnamdi Kanu, his release does not mean that insecurity would be fully gone,” he remarked. The call is in the best interests of the whole South East.
“When I visited him in prison, he (Kanu) was saddened by the extent of crime associated with the agitation. He referred to it as an abomination.
“Everyone has suddenly become a freedom warrior, using it as an avenue to do the crime. If he is released, he will be able to tell the difference between true freedom fighters and criminals.
“A political problem is still holding him back. I am awaiting confirmation of my appointment with the President in order to properly present him with the letter.”
