I didn’t sponsor Pa Oseni’s burial — Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the February 25, 2023 election, has vehemently denied allegations suggesting that he funded the burial of journalist Rufai Oseni’s father.

Obi clarified his stance due to baseless rumors propagated by malicious individuals who insinuated that his support for the journalist’s father’s burial was driven by a desire for favorable publicity.

Through a statement issued by his Media Office on Monday, Obi expressed his disdain for attempts by what he labeled as sponsored blackmailers. These individuals were attempting to associate him with negative actions in an effort to tarnish his well-established reputation.

He urged these individuals to redirect their energy toward contributing to a better Nigeria and dismissed their unfounded notions.

Obi stated, “Normally, I refrain from engaging in name-calling and character assassination. I don’t attack people or attempt to defame their character during my political journey. I have also chosen not to publicly respond to baseless, malicious blackmails thrown at me.”

He made it clear that he only felt compelled to clarify matters when a third party was involved.

He clarified, “Recently, my name was falsely mentioned in a malicious blackmail against one of Nigeria’s finest television presenters, Mr. Rufai Oseni, who has consistently advocated for what is just and has challenged me fearlessly on some occasions by speaking truth to power.”

Obi firmly refuted the claim, emphasizing that he has never financially incentivized any journalist to speak favourably about him. He also explained that he frequently attends social events like birthdays and funerals, bringing gifts to support the celebrants in line with Igbo tradition.

Obi further highlighted the pressing challenges facing Nigeria, such as poverty and unemployment, and urged that efforts should be directed toward resolving these issues. He concluded by expressing his commitment to addressing these challenges for the betterment of the nation.
